Lita Cabellut

BIOGRAPHY

Lita Cabellut was born in 1961 in Barcelona, Spain where she grew up in a poor Gypsy-environment. Her work is closely intertwined with the memories of the old area of Barcelona, El Raval, with closeness to the docks, La Bocquerai market, Las Ramblas and Sant Antonie market, replete with pickpockets, street performers and prostitutes.

Lita lived her gypsy-childhood in Barcelona. After 13 years of street and orphan life Cabellut was adopted. It is at this time that she discovered the Prado Museum and the work of Goya, Velazquez, Rivera, and Rembrandt. Lita decided to become an artist. To this end she started to take classical paint technique classes four times each week taught by an established master painter. Four years later, at the age of 17, Lita's work was on exhibit at the Town Hall of Masnou, Barcelona.

At the age of 19 she decided to leave her native country of Spain for new challenges in the Netherlands. Between 1982-1984 she studied at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. As early as the year 1988 Lita was well established enough to earn a living solely from her artistic endeavors.

Lita Cabellut is considered to be a painter with a unique pictorial language, using a contemporary variation on the fresco-technique and her own personalized 'Cabellut-palette'. Cabellut is widely considered as an "informal figurative painter" who uses mixed techniques to achieve her art. Many people have been highly appreciative of her beautiful adaptations.

The unkind childhood has been a fountain of inspiration in her career. For her latest exhibit, La Perla Negra, featured in London, Cabellut looks to the late artist, with her own setbacks in life, Frida Khalo. Find out more about what inspires Cabellut and how those inspirations, sometimes-painful ones; have shaped her art in the latest issue of Schön!

She has had her artwork exhibited in galleries and museums around the globe including New York, Dubai, Miami, Singapore, Hong Kong, Barcelona, London, Paris, Venice, Monaco, and Seoul, Korea.
