PRESS RELEASE

Los Angeles, CA (October 20, 2017) – Exhibiting for the first time in California,KM Fine Arts Los Angeles is pleased to announce Paris based Canadian photographer Kourtney Roy’s Enter as Fiction – California. Roy’s series of self-portraits tell the story of a solitary two -month wander along Route 66. A private VIP preview with the artist will be held from On Wednesday, November 1st, 7-10PM. A members- only reception will be held at SOHO House West Hollywood on Thursday, November 2nd from 6-8 PM where an additional selection of works will be on view.

Set in vast, wide-open spaces, at the intersection of where “nature meets civilization” is where Roy purposely sets her dejected and emotionless characterswithin the suburban sprawl, at humble movie-like motels, gas stations, parking lots and factories, reinforcing their ordinary existence. Exploring the underbelly of mundane society, throwing light onto its darkness. Roy’s striking self-portraits have a cinematic air, inspired by American films from the 1950’s through the 1980”s that conjures up the great Hitchcock and Lynch-esque iconic film stills.

Influenced early in her career by the late Guy Bourdin, whose photography contained strange and often haunting narratives, Roy was drawn to the idea of “ making little stories “ into a single frame. Roy’s Enter as Fiction – California series was selected as 1 of 5 photographers, joining the late Bourdin, for Louis Vuitton’s Fashion Eye book collection. What set's Roy's collaboration with Louis Vuitton apart from other guidebooks is her use of retro imagery and her immersion into California road trip car culture. Her car doubled as a mobile studio and wardrobe. With her car packed with wigs, vintage clothes, and accessories she hit the open road in search of locations to shoot.

“I was drawn to California because there is a sort of frozen deterioration in the desert landscape, as though time moves much slower despite the concurrent and continuous development taking place. California was for me a metaphor for the cinematic screen onto which I could project my images. There is an openness of the sky and desert that lends itself to a certain form of ambiguous storytelling. “ Kourtney Roy
