Boxing Paintings by Dana Louise Kirkpatrick Unpack Personal and Historical Narratives

Upon entering Dana Louise Kirkpatrick’s current solo exhibition, “RING GIRL,” at KM Fine Arts, one immediately smells the vague aroma of oil paint, making the viewer’s first experience of the work an olfactive one. Comprised of large-scale paintings and unframed drawings that depict male boxers in various states of victory and bloody defeat, the show suggests that painting itself is a duel, both on an intimate level and a historical one.

From Used Books to Painter’s Tape, Ramsey Dau’s Hyperrealist Paintings of Collages

Ramsey Dau admits he had no real interest in African sculpture before stumbling across a battered copy of Jean Laude’s 1971 book The Arts of Black Africa in a bookstore. According to Dau’s account, the “poorly photographed, poorly reproduced” book spoke to him, and he decided to incorporate it into his latest series of hyperrealist paintings.
